Basongco, also known as Cuoguo Lake—which means “green water” in Tibetan—is located in Cuoguo Township, Gongbu Jiangda County, Nyingchi City, Tibet. It lies more than 50 kilometers from the county seat and approximately 360 kilometers from Lhasa, right next to National Highway 318. It is Tibet’s first 5A-level scenic area for natural landscapes, a National Forest Park, and a renowned sacred lake of the Nyingma School (Red Sect) of Tibetan Buddhism.

The lake lies at an elevation of 3,490 meters and is a glacial-dammed freshwater lake. It has an overall narrow, crescent shape, with a surface area of approximately 27 square kilometers, an average depth of 60 meters, and a maximum depth of 120 meters; The scenic area covers a total of 37.5 square kilometers, with an average elevation of 3,600 meters. It features high forest coverage and abundant oxygen levels, making it less prone to altitude sickness than Namtso or Yamdrok Lake; it is often referred to as the “Little Switzerland of Tibet.”

Basong Lake is the "Emerald Sacred Lake" of Gongbu Jiangda in Nyingchi and Tibet’s first 5A-rated natural scenic area. Its low elevation makes it less prone to altitude sickness. The emerald-green lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and vast forests, with a thousand-year-old Red Sect monastery at its center, complemented by the pristine Gongbu Tibetan village—a harmonious blend of natural beauty, spiritual faith, and cultural heritage.
