Lhasa Baobei Garden, the summer palace of successive Dalai Lamas, is a renowned royal garden and historic site in Tibet.

景點介紹

Located on the western outskirts of Lhasa, Norbulingka—which means “Garden of Treasures” in Tibetan—is Tibet’s largest and best-preserved man-made imperial garden. It is also the world’s highest-altitude garden heritage site and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, earning the reputation as the “Imperial Garden of the Snowland.” Construction began here in the 18th century, and it served as the summer retreat for successive Dalai Lamas, complementing the Potala Palace, their winter residence. It embodies centuries of Tibet’s political, religious, and landscape art traditions.

The entire garden covers a vast area, blending Tibetan palace architecture, Chinese garden layout, and South Asian horticultural styles, breaking away from the solemn and monotonous character of traditional Tibetan architecture. The grounds are shaded by lush trees, feature crystal-clear lakes, and are adorned with vibrant flower beds, with pavilions, terraces, and towers arranged in a harmonious and balanced layout. The complex primarily comprises the core palace clusters of Gesang Pochang, Golden Pochang, and Dadan Mingjiu Pochang, The palaces house a vast collection of precious murals, thangkas, Buddhist statues, and historical artifacts, all characterized by exquisite craftsmanship and profound cultural significance, providing a comprehensive record of Tibet’s modern historical transformations.

Unlike the bustling, devotional atmosphere of Barkhor Street, Norbulingka offers a quiet and serene ambiance; it is a rare natural green space and hidden gem for relaxation in Lhasa. The best time to visit is from May to October each year, when the park is lush with greenery and the climate is mild and comfortable, making it ideal for sightseeing, strolling, and taking photos. During the Tibetan Shoton Festival, the park hosts grand Tibetan opera performances and folk activities. Local residents gather here, creating a lively and festive atmosphere—making it an excellent opportunity to experience Tibet’s traditional folk culture.

The park features elegant and exquisite architecture, serene and pleasant natural scenery, and a perfect blend of cultural heritage and ecological landscapes. We recommend that visitors allow 2 to 3 hours for their visit to thoroughly explore the palace artifacts, stroll through the woods and along the lake, immerse themselves in the unique charm of this royal garden of the Snowland, and appreciate Tibet’s distinctive architectural art and cultural traditions.
